Resolume is the default answer to "what is the VJ running?", a clip-and-layer instrument built for the specific problem of playing a picture live, against music, without stopping.

Resolume occupies a specific position in the toolchain: it is the instrument the operator actually plays. Everything upstream produces material; this is where the material becomes a show, in real time, in response to music nobody has heard performed this way before.

The grid, and why it is the right model

The interface is a grid of cells. Rows are layers that composite bottom to top; columns group cells that belong together. The operator can fire a whole column to change everything at once, or trigger individual cells to build a look piece by piece.

This maps directly onto how a live picture is actually constructed, a bed, a mid layer carrying motion, a top layer for hits, a global treatment across all of them. The software is shaped like the problem, which is most of why it became the standard.

Clip banks under pressure

The grid is only as good as its organisation, and organising clip banks is a craft covered in detail under VJ workflow. The short version is that layout follows the hand, not the filename: beds where the hand rests, builds within reach, hits somewhere distinct, blackout somewhere unmistakable.

Tempo, and the drift it prevents

Clips are cut at a tempo; music is performed at another. Resolume resamples clip playback against an incoming clock, which is the single feature that makes live playback viable at all. A rig without a reliable clock source is a rig where the operator spends the evening nudging instead of performing.

The grid is the whole argument. Columns fire a look at once, rows always carry the same kind of material, and an operator who has laid the grid out well can work it without reading a single label.

That is what an instrument buys: the interface makes strong assumptions, and in exchange the remaining moves are reliable in the dark, under fatigue, with a room waiting. A tool that assumed less would allow more and could not be played.

Where it hands over

Upstream, content creation fills the banks and real-time tools supply anything that has to react rather than repeat. Downstream, the output goes to the surfaces defined by the LED specification and the mapping stage. It is a middle link, and a load-bearing one.

What it does not do

It plays material; it does not make it. Anything that has to be computed while the show is happening (a picture reacting to a live audio feed, a tracked object, an improvising performer) belongs to real-time rendering instead, and anything that has to connect several machines and make them behave belongs to the systems tool.

Its mapping stage is sufficient for straightforward surfaces and runs out on complicated ones. Where the geometry is genuinely awkward, most rigs pair it with a dedicated mapping stage and let each do the part it is better at.

One consequence is worth stating for anyone specifying a rig: the instrument is chosen for the hands that will use it. An operator fluent in this grid will produce a better show on it than on a more capable tool they have to think about, and on a live set thinking about the tool is the failure mode.

The corollary is that the grid is worth laying out long before the material is finished. Placeholder clips in the right cells teach the hand where things live, and a bank learned early survives content that arrives late, which, on most productions, it does.

What is Resolume used for?

Resolume is VJ software: it holds a grid of clip banks, composites them across layers, applies effects and sends the result to the show output. It exists for the case where the picture is played live rather than run to timecode.

How is the interface organised?

As a grid. Columns are typically scenes or moments, rows are layers, and each cell is a clip. Triggering a column fires a whole look at once; triggering individual cells builds a look by hand. Most operators use both within one show.

Does Resolume do projection mapping?

It has a mapping and warping stage on its output, which is sufficient for straightforward surfaces. For complex geometry, many rigs pair it with a dedicated mapping tool such as MadMapper and let each do the part it is better at.

Can it be synced to music?

Yes — that is central to it. Clip playback can be locked to a BPM clock from a tap, an incoming link signal or beat detection, so clip banks stay in time when the tempo is not what the content was cut for. Without this the picture drifts within bars.

Where does Resolume stop?

At generative content. It plays and composites extremely well, but it does not author real-time material, for that a rig adds Notch or TouchDesigner upstream and treats their output as another source.
